STRANGE

STRANGE, a program for queer youth in Santa Cruz County

The STRANGE Program’s purpose is to support LGBTQQIAAP youth (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Allies and Pansexual) in Santa Cruz County though peer support groups, youth-created events and other fun activities.

The STRANGE Program serves youth between the ages of 12 through 21 years old. The groups and events are separated based on age appropriateness, with some events specifically for middle-school aged youth and some events specifically for high-school aged teens.

The goal of the STRANGE Program is to create a safe environment that fosters an experience of empowerment and full acceptance for all expressions of gender and sexual orientation. STRANGE also creates an opportunity for queer youth to obtain a positive and supportive group of peers.

Queer youth often have to grapple with a multitude of challenges: self-discovery, coming out, bullying at schools, self-acceptance, and unsupportive family members or peer groups. The STRANGE program creates a place where youth can explore these challenges and find opportunities to support each other with these issues as well.

Youth are invited to participate in creating STRANGE Program activities according to their own interests and needs. This process of involvement empowers youth by allowing them the opportunity to create their own safe space.
